Hmong folktales have a great way of connecting things that may not seem to be connected. Everything begins because of something else, and before you know it, you'll be telling a winding story starting from the depths of history.
It is tradition for children to belong to their father's clan name and for women to retain their clan name. Marrying a member of one's clan in seemed as taboo. These clan names are used as surnames in the USA.
The Hmong are a strong-willed, respectful Asian ethnic group located in the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, & Thailand. Wherever they traveled, they never assimilated. Instead they preserved their rich traditions for centuries to come.
Did You Know That?
The Hmong lived in China for 2000 years before generally migrating south in the 1700s. They moved to escape the oppressive Qing Dynasty. Although the Chinese were 250 times larger than them, the Chinese never seemed to control them.
